Theoretically, cells can be kept frozen in liquid nitrogen forever without loosing their ability to revive. What really affect the survival rate of cells after defreezing is the technique of freezing and defreezing. Most important is the freezing step, during which the temperature drop rate should be controlled not too fast, but not too slow.
