随着人类基因组的展开，人们也越来越关注于算法的研究。生物信息学的计算的核心是序列的比较。其主要目的是阐明序列之间的同源关系，并且从已知的序列去推算出新序列的结构和功能。人们之所以在算法上大做文章是因为核酸和蛋白质序列的计算，很容易在存储容量和计算时间上超出现代计算机的处理能力。
