New Polypeptide Standards:
SDS-PAGE and Kaleidoscope
Bio-Rad’s new polypeptide standards are available as
SDS-PAGE molecular weight standards or as prestained
Kaleidoscope standards. This new class of standards provides
valuable information specifically for research involving
polypeptide and small molecular weight proteins.
The SDS-PAGE molecular weight standards are specifically
designed for determining the molecular weights of peptides
and small proteins on SDS-PAGE gels. Each tube contains six
proteins, ranging from 1,423 to 26,625 daltons, which create
a distinctive pattern of even intensity bands when separated on
a 16.5% Tris-Tricine or 10–20% Tris-Tricine gel. The standards
produce excellent results when stained with Coomassie®
G-250 dye.
The Kaleidoscope Polypeptide Standards contain five individually
colored proteins for easy identification of the protein
bands. The Kaleidoscope standards are useful for assessing the
transfer efficiency of a Western blot, and for monitoring an
electrophoretic gel during the run. The different colors make
band identification very easy and serve as a quick reference to
estimating the molecular weight range.
The molecular weights of prestained standards vary from one
lot to another because the amount of dye that binds to a protein
molecule is variable. The molecular weight range of the five
polypeptide standards is from 3,496 to 31,000 daltons. Each
lot of Kaleidoscope Polypeptide Standards is calibrated using
the SDS-PAGE polypeptide molecular weight standards. A calibration
card is included with every lot of the Kaleidoscope
Polypeptide Standards.
Every batch of Polypeptide SDS-PAGE Standards is tested for
proper mobility to insure consistent quality and reliable control
for gel-to-gel variability. Kaleidoscope Polypeptide Standards
are also held to rigorous quality standards to ensure lot to lot
consistency in band intensity and migration.
SDS-PAGE and Kaleidoscope Polypeptide Standards are provided
pre-blended in a stable storage buffer which allows the
standards to be stored at -20 °C for up to 1 year without
freeze/thaw degradation, eliminating the need to aliquot. Each
vial is shipped with instructions and is guaranteed for 1 year
when stored at -20 °C.
